Sharks Women Mechelen brings a particularly interesting talent to Belgium in 18-year-old Icelandic forward Kolbrun Bjornsdottir. The young attacker is coming to live in Belgium and will strengthen our Sharks Women in the strong DFEL2 Nord — think Bundesliga 2.
Belgian ice hockey fans may still recognise her name: on 20 January 2025, Iceland and Belgium faced each other at the U18 World Championship. Bjornsdottir was one of the Icelandic players who made the difference that day, scoring to make it 3-0 against Belgium, with Iceland eventually winning 7-0. A moment we in Mechelen naturally remember all too well. 😉🇧🇪🇮🇸
But Kolbrun brings far more than that one goal. She is an attack-minded player who has already gained considerable international experience at a young age with Iceland U18. At the 2025 U18 World Championship she collected 5 goals and 5 assists in four games, good for 10 points.
Her continued development is promising as well. In the 2026 U18 tournament, Bjornsdottir was once again highly productive: 7 goals and 6 assists in five games, good for 13 points. She has also already played in 3 World Championships with Iceland's senior team.
With her speed, scoring ability and international experience, Kolbrun could prove a strong addition to the ever-ambitious Sharks Women Mechelen. On top of that, Mechelen gives her the chance to develop further in a competitive environment and to take her first steps outside Iceland. And of course, we can't ignore the lovely sporting irony: the player who hurt Belgium at the U18 World Championship will soon be wearing the Sharks jersey! 🦈😉
